The best answer is TeamViewer that is FREE for personal use. The application also runs on iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone 8.

1) First download and install TeamViewer on your PC. The installation gives you three options:

Install: A full installation of the TeamViewer client, with all available options.
Install to control this computer later from remote: If you want to be able to access your desktop remotely, without having to input a code (also known as "unattended access"), choose this option.
Run only: The software runs, but nothing gets installed. This is a great option if you want to keep TeamViewer on, say, a flash drive. But it doesn't allow for unattended access.

Then you need to remember to choose "personal / non-commercial use" option in the bottom half of the setup window. When finish you must run the application on your desktop.

2) Now install TeamViewer on your iPad. Star the TeamViewer App, and then enter the TeamViewer ID number and password shown in the remote computer. If you set up unattended access, you'll need only the password (which you created) for future sessions.

Once you're connected, you'll instantly see your desktop on your iPad screen.

Now you can control your computer as if you were sitting right in front of it.
TeamViewer may be great for running programs you can't install on your Smartphone or tablet, retrieving a file you left behind, checking your e-mail archive, and so on.

TeamViewer is good, all things considered. But security is my primary concern, so I've gone with RHUB's remote support servers. It works from behind the firewall, hence total security.
