You’ve just upgrade your operating system to Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and now want to wirelessly share internet connection (Wi-Fi, LAN, Cable Modem, Dial-up, Cellular, etc.) with other Wi-Fi devices. As familiar ways in Windows 7, you open Control Panel then Network and Sharing Center to create an ad-hoc wireless network, but cannot find any option to go.
So in this tutorial I will show some easier ways to share internet connection not just to create a wireless ad hoc connection in Windows 8.
The most easiest and simple way is to use third party software like Virtual Router or Connectify Hotspot to turn your PC into a Wi-Fi hotspot.

I. Connectify Hotspot
  1. First of all you need to download and install Connectify Hotspot on you PC. Their official download page is right here: http://www.connectify.me/download/
  2. After installation completed, restart your computer.
  3. If a Windows Security Alert of Windows Firewall appears, then you need to click Allow access button to add Connectify Hotspot to the list of allowed apps.

  4. In some next screens, you should click to choose Connectify Hotspot Lite to use it for free Big Grin
  5. At the settings window:
    • Hotspot Name: enter your desired hotspot name (SSID) after the "Connectify-" prefix. Only Hotspot PRO lets you choose any SSID you want.
    • Password: input your desired network security key.
    • Internet to Share: choose your available internet connection (Wi-Fi, LAN…) that you want to share.
    • Share Over:
      i. Choose Wi-Fi to create a Wi-Fi hotspot.
ii. Choose Ethernet to share over a wired connection (only available in Pro version)
    • Sharing Mode: WPA2 as default if you choose Wi-Fi in Share Over option.

  6. Now click Start Hotspot button. It’s ready to connect other Wi-Fi devices to this hotspot and enjoy life.
II. Virtual Router
  1. Go to the official website of Virtual Router at http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/ to download and install the software.
  2. Do not need to restart. Just launch the application.
  3. At the settings window:
    • Network Name (SSID): enter your desired hotspot name. It lets you choose any SSID you want, do not like Connectify Hotspot Big Grin
    • Password: input your desired network security key.
    • Shared Connection: choose your available internet connection (Wi-Fi, LAN…) that you want to share.

  4. Now click Start Virtual Router button and connect your Wi-Fi devices such as iPhone, Android smartphone, iPad, laptop … to this hotspot and enjoy.
For those who do not want to install third-party software you could check this thread to set up a Wireless Ad Hoc through the netsh command.
