Many users reported that they could not find the Windows 8.1 Update in the Windows Store, if you experienced that issue; please follow each method below and check if it could resolve your problem.

1. If you are running Windows 8.1 Preview check here to find the instructions. If not, see the next method.

2. If the update KB 2871389 was not installed before updating to Windows 8.1
  • Press Windows key + I to open the Charms Menu – Settings
  • Click on the option “Change PC settings” and then click on Windows Update.
  • Click Check for updates now, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates. If you don't have automatic installation of important updates turned on, you might need to click Turn on recommended settings before you can check for updates.
  • Click Install to install all the recommended updates in the list and ensure it includes KB2871389.
Note: if you have issues with installing Windows Update then try to reset Windows Update by running the automated Windows Update troubleshooter here.

3. If the update KB 2871389 was already installed before updating to Windows 8.1
  • Uninstalling it then check for updates again and reinstall it.
  • When the updates are done, restart your PC and then open Windows Store to check for the Windows 8.1 Update.
Note: if you have issues with installing Windows Update then try to reset Windows Update by running the automated Windows Update troubleshooter here.

4. If Windows 8.1 Update is still not appearing in the Windows Store.
  • Press Windows + R key to open Run box.
  • Type WSReset.exe and press Enter.
  • Reboot and check the Windows Store for the Windows 8.1 update option. If it is still not appearing, check the next method.
5. Sync App License:
  • Open the Windows Store.
  • Press Windows key + I to open the Charms Menu – Settings.
  • Click on the option “App updates”
  • Click Sync licenses then reboot and check the Windows Store for the Windows 8.1 update option. If it is still not appearing, check the next method
6. Use the SFC /SCANNOW (System File Checker)
  • Press the Windows button + X + A to open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  • If sfc /scannow did actually repair any files > Restart your computer and try updating again.
  • If no errors are found, reboot your computer and try updating again
Note: If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 times restarting the PC after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.

7. The last method:
  • Open Windows Update and click Check Now often.
  • Press Windows + R key to open Run box.
  • Type ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade and press Enter and hope that the Windows 8.1 update will appear.
Note:
1. If you are using a Multiple Activation Product Key through a Commercial or MSDN contact, you must run update using media obtained through those programs
2. If you are running a Windows Enterprise Edition or Volume License version of Windows Pro you must speak to your system administer about how to update.
If you are not sure, the following steps will help you identify if you have a Volume License version of Windows:
  • Press Windows + R key to open Run box.
  • Type slmgr.vbs /dli and press Enter
  • The Windows Script Host will appear
  • Check the second line Description to see it says “RETAIL channel” or “Volume Channel”
If it says “Volume Channel” you won’t be able to get it through the store and will need to talk to your System administrator about their plans for rolling out this update.
